LIGHT AND DARK – Crypt Residency: Artist Simon Brewster

Simon Brewster:

Most of my recent work has involved making small, idiosyncratic objects, using found, degraded, or recycled materials where possible. Many emit light or are kinetic. Some works are intended to counterpoint (and sometimes parody) our contemporary, slick, digital world.

For The Crypt Gallery, I intend to build two, kinetic installations:

‘The Dripping Room’ will consist of a series of containers with wicks, dripping water onto various materials and objects. Drips will also fall into trays of water with mirrors set inside them. Light will be projected into the trays and create ripple shadows on the ceiling.

‘The Candle Room’ will use lenses and mirrors to project and enlarge images of candles, which will move and flicker as a viewer enters the space.

Both installations will seek to evoke feelings of pathos, entropy, futility.
