Collapsed and Reassembled On The Reading of Contemporary Art

November 21, 2018-12:00 pm - November 28, 2018-5:00 pm

21 November – 28 November 2018

Opening Reception: 20 November, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

We are pleased to announce an exhibition of multi-media artworks by a group of emerging artists and designers. Towards the end of this November, the Crypt Gallery will be presenting Collapsed and Reassembled – a series of prints, paintings, photographs, installations, stage performance and moving images produced by artists graduating from Central Saint Martins. This exhibition is curated and disseminated by WorkInProgress Studio; it is a great opportunity to discuss ‘the reading and interpretations’ within the context of contemporary art. With the attitude of embracing and celebrating the diversity of interpretation, we are challenging the implication of a uniform set of disciplines in reading contemporary art. Here at Collapsed and Reassembled, reading contemporary art is a continuous process of stripping away layers of meaning between artists and the artworks.

We invite audiences to redefine and pursue their own reflections on the artworks. Through assembling artworks with different aesthetics, and combining with the parish church gallery environment, Collapsed and Reassembled aims to deconstruct the original contexts of the artworks. The exhibition provides a platform for artists to make responses to the environment and it encourages audiences to get out of the given social contexts and makes their self-interpretation.

Across a week in the heart of King’s Cross in London, the exhibition brings together diverse artists with different practices from different cultural backgrounds. At Crypt Gallery on Euston Road visitors will be able to explore unusual expressions on these themes through a variety of art forms by eight contemporary artists – Kang Gao, Pandora Yun Peng, Rose Mengmei Zhou, Emily Penfold, Sonia Odera, Hazel Chiang, Tingwei Liang, and Lisa Jiang.

The exhibition is curated by Dorothea Lam, Vera Gan, Candice Ouyang and Emily Zhou. Through collapsing stereotypical implication from similar artworks and reassembling own interpretation based on different backgrounds, the exhibition provides a vehicle to access your own mind, away from the established social context.
