‘A Woman’s Place’ is Alice Parsloe’s second solo show. This exhibition explores the tensions of contemporary female identity through personal experience and by reimagining art history.
Alice Parsloe worked as an actor before motherhood changed her position in the world and ultimately her career. She’s subsequently worked as a fine artist for 10 years and appears in the latest series of Sky Portrait Artist of the Year.
‘This exhibition began with a quest for a stronger human connection when looking at historical artworks. A renowned painting with a central male figure would present itself with the question of ‘What if? When a familiar artwork is reconstructed with a female story, how does our response change?’
I began to consider what it is to paint whilst looking at history, and how it relates to modern life. The world has changed unrecognisably, but some challenges faced by women artists remain the same. Throughout time, creating art seems to be a way of asking questions about the world that surrounds us. And when painting a portrait inspired by 16th century artist Sofonisba Anquissola, an answer appeared on the canvas!’
