Before Eve, another kind of intimacy existed in Eden. God and Adam were close before loneliness had a name, before sexual difference had a shape. Eve’s arrival did more than introduce a new figure. It redrew the terms of intimacy altogether, placing the heterosexual pair at its centre and casting everything else out of the story. After Eden begins here, at the moment queer desire was written out of the sacred.

That erasure did not happen only once. It repeats across cultures, religions and social orders. Desire is renamed as deviance. Bodies are refused by families, faith communities and nations. For many queer people, displacement begins not with geography but with the realisation that belonging was never on offer. Over twenty artists respond to this condition through photography, painting, sculpture, installation, textile and live performance. They come from London, Beijing, Seoul, Berlin and Northern Europe, and they hold a question in common: when the body has been cast out of the origin story, how does intimacy find new ground. The exhibition occupies the vaults beneath St Pancras New Church, a Grade I listed building from 1822. The space is held in near-total darkness. The works themselves are the only light. Informed by Jack Halberstam’s writing on queer time, the exhibition moves through three temporal registers within a single architecture: sustained viewing across the week, live performance on Opening Night, and collective gathering on Saturday evening. London’s queer venues have been quietly disappearing for years. The communities they held together scatter and reassemble somewhere new. Goen After Eden, co-programmed with Goen, a cross-cultural music platform bringing together artists from the UK, China, Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea, continues this rhythm. In the Crypt, sound and bodies fill the vaults for one night. The gathering is not a supplement to the exhibition. It is the point at which the space stops being watched and starts being shared.
